    Hunting in the USA info.

Hi all after some info as I will be heading to Japan next year. And on the way back wouldn't mind stopping off in USA or Canada for a hunt. Now the thing is all I can find is most outfitters are 10day hunts etc and not really what in after so if anyone could recommend a place from past experiences on black Bear or mountain goat etc that isn't going to set me back 10k that would be nice also if there is a way if I was to buy a rifle in USA how do I go about getting it back to nz thanks

I don't have any contact for you.
But you have to ask yourself when are you going there? Because there might be a season for the particular prey you are after.
For the hunting of black bear, a lot of guys are shooting them in tree stand over a bait or worse over a rubbish dump.
I don't call that hunting myself. But each to their own. The mountain sheep is another story, when you got one most of the time you ve earned it!

As to buying a rifle in the USA , I tried myself but at the time i had to be a resident for at least 6 months ( and not on a tourist visa!)
You can however legally borrow a rifle or rent one to go hunting with but you can't buy one.

The USA is a big place, might help if you can narrow down which section you would possibly visit.

As to seasons, we have much narrow seasons than you do, so timing is everything. Bear would not require a lottery tag in most areas, and can be hunted in spring or fall (or both) depending on the state/province. They can be hunted from stands, stalking, bait, hounds, or as Friwi said, over a dump in some areas. The style of hunting varies with the state.

Mountain goat and sheep are almost certainly unavailable, since most require a lottery for the tag, and many people have been putting in for the lottery 10-20 years.

Be glad to try to answer any other questions you might have.

Most outfitters have guide rifles but if you really want to purchase one and bring it back it is a bit of paper work.

I hope to head over next whitetail season to Alberta or Saskatchewan. Been putting it off a few seasons because of recent advice.
We are just wanting to see how hard this winter is going to be before we decide.
Otherwise it will definitely a Yukon moose hunt if a lot of bucks are said to die this winter.

As already noted, it would likely be easier to get set up for black bear hunting rather than mountain goat. Wisconsin, which is not known for any mountains to speak of (ergo not goats) but has a very dense black bear population. Do you have any particular states/provinces you are planning to visit?
