Hunting and the Weather

Greetings All,
Recently the hunting rifles in the safe have been getting a bit grumpy when I take out one of the target rifles for a trip to the range. This morning I went on line and got a new hunting permit for the Kaweka's. The last one was issued a little over 2 years ago. Having recently celebrated, if that is the right word, my 76th birthday hunting in my case should likely be described as mid week gentlemen's hours track wanders with rifle. Next stop was the next 10 days weather for my favourite spot. Rain forecast every day. Week days seem to be in short supply as well with two long weekends in a row. I should not get too grumpy as we need a bit of rain to get a bit of grass growth before winter sets in. I heard that from the SI granted we do not get real winters here in HB but they seem cold enough for us. So I will keep my eye on the weather forecast and hope to get out before the end of the month. Any trip, cold or hot, wet or dry, are always worth it, just getting away from home and normal life and out into the hills away from the hordes. And if you see a few animals, all the better, enjoy.:thumbsup:

The animals are there no matter what the weather is....it is because humans are soft-cocks is why the animals thrive.

I see more animals in shit windy rainy weather than in fine bondi beach weather.

Not going out over the next couple of weeks as all the loonies will be out

Not an expert, but I shot my first public land deer in torrential rain at a distance of under 2 metres, so there's that!

Hunting in the Kaimai's will change with this rain storm coming in, hinds on the BoP side will move to the Waikato side to shelter from the weather and the stags will have to follow which will hopefully cause strife among the resident stags on the Waikato side...there will be plenty of feed on the ground with wind blown leaves and broken branches....Easter weekend will a great time to hunt the Waikato side.

The weather always seems worse than it is when its beating on a roof, and can look worse on weather maps than it often turns out.
I look very carefully at the rainbars and wind direction on the forecasts because what looks like rain is often drizzly overcast or just showers.
If the weather is going to be shit though it's usually pretty obvious on the forecasts and I don't chance it.

Because I go out most weeks Im always planning ahead and scanning the weather.

That will change soon though 'cos my health has struck me a blow and will put me out of commission for several months - fortunately its going to be winter and I will be back into it hopefully for the late spring.

I hear you Grandpamac, and I'm pacing around like a caged lion thanks to the Tropical Cyclone forecast. But disregard all the young fellas that are claiming success in foul weather. Us 1948 models take a bit of maintenance. Ive had a bless'd run really. A new valve and clean pipes will see me pull out and pass Nimrod going up the dirtiest spur. Thanks for the best wishes folks.

Rest up for the winter,let the body do the healing.Watch some good rugby with yr good dogy mate for company.

I feel so young turning 71 at Easter,my health been good compared to others.2 knee replacements,buggered left shoulder,buggered right thumb,pills keep the heart purring along nicely.I enjoy shooting deer,drinking a beer watching rugby.Well done you guys in the 75 -76s +s go for it,better than being in a rest home.

Gentlemen I am in awe. 50 feels old to me. If I’m still sneaking around in the bushes in 25 years i will be truly grateful.

55 this year and feeling it in the mornings ,had manual labour job all my life , once moving about. Not too bad but morning and evenings suck..bourbon helps though..

Yeah. Make the most of your health.
Ive known in my head there has been something wrong for quite a while.
Fitness is important chaps - surgeon says that my exercise regime has opened up other heart blood vessels that are saving the day.
I asked him a few weeks ago if I could still go hunting. He said with a frown "it's not the sort of thing we are wanting you to do".
But damn it, I would rather die wandering than wondering. So I haven't stopped - I just take it carefully.

Good luck Tahr and best wishes for a speedy recovery. I'm a measly 56 next week but have noticed a few more aches and pains that seem to crop up out of "nowhere". It becomes a constant battle to keep on top of things.
Youth is wasted on the young :)

Not long 70 here. Doing more than ever, but give up going out in the rain many years ago, avoid the heat to.
I'm a fair weather man. I figure your meant to enjoy it not suffer through it. Lol

Walk a lot less to, mostly ambush them and doing ok I might add. It's surprising how far you don't need to go from the ute sometimes.

Probably lucky health wise but not particularly fit.

I say just keep on keeping on.

I shoot all my deer from the bonnet of the truck neat.Ambush them,let them walk to you.

I’m obviously one who can enjoy the more dramatic weather, but not every time. I figure do what you enjoy.

I like what Lambie said. I let the gun take me for a walk, it’s pretty much the best thing i can do for mental health, and if i shoot something that’s a bonus.

Some of my best memories have been in the wicked weather. No one else around, all the colours are brighter from the wetness and there’s enough noise from wind and rain that it’s easier to sneak up on things or get chance encounters.

But I’ve also worked a lot of outdoor/field work jobs where it’s all day, rain or shine. Wet undies within the first hour of the day just shit.

Sorry to hear about the health Tahr. Having the bush to get back to will make the difference i reckon.
