Hamish
I've nailed several wwaayy out the back of farms and a very long way from roads.
When I drove the acheron road through molesworth last month I saw half a dozen, seen them up skippers canyon, and they r all over Stewart Island, mainly on the western side though
Saw one up in the seaward Kaikouras last week.
There are shitloads of them in rabbit country i.e. the dryer parts of canterbuty that back onto hills or the Mackenzie. I have always wanted to do proper preaditor hunting like the yanks do (rabbit distress call and a moving lure\bait) and wild cats are the only species we have.
Used my M24 light and a hand held laser down in Alexandra over Easter on a feral cat. Thing was mesmerised, then it had a lie down and a big sleep.
.223 Ouch ness !!!

Where does one buy a cat caller ??
I shot one a month for 18 months up the Rakaia, they are bloody everywhere and get no second chances if I have a rifle handy.
Ebay might have predator callers ?
They are seriously cunning i know that, some even blend in wearing "domesticated" camo :)

Fish oil/tuna paste spread on a tree upwind of our sheds/bin stacks certainly brings them into the open, so i can photograph them
Usual disclaimer applies............
Shot 3 in the last few months, had a farm we shot out Wainaro Hot springs Ngaruawahia, heaps of wild cats, must be Hamiltons dumping ground? One thing I agree with Gareth on GET RID OF CATS in NZ, they are mongrel animals, the damage they do, OH but we'd need more 1080 to control the proliferation of Rats, mice, etc etc, :O_O:
