It depeends on getting a very accurate compass bearing. You can end up quite along way out left or right.
And on taking a couple of minutes to set it up carefully before you rush off looking for the dead deer.
Two other things you should do as a back up are:
Put put a bright marker where you shot from and take a back bearing when you get near spot B.
Take a zoomed in photo of said spot B and use an edit function to draw a mark on it where the deer was. Practice first.
