i hear that garmin have a tool that helps you find that deer on that slip

i have heard something about a garmin wrist worn tool , that when you ( say ) shoot a deer from the ridge you are on , to the slip way the fck over there , you just point to where the deer went into the scrub on the slip , and then just start making you down into the gut , then up the other side to where you where pointing , and some how the wrist tool keeps you ontrack , to the spot where the 26 point stag shot into the srcub .
All meaning , to me , not leaving my mate at spot A , shouting at me , and waving , like a fool in some sort of invented semaphore .
Anyone know anything about this ?

Many of the topo apps and gps units etc have a tool that does this. Often called ‘sight and go’ or ‘go to’.

Basically input the distance and compass bearing, and it will project a waypoint on the map for you.

I had one called a track back...You mark a way point where you start and whereever you go it tells you how far and in what direction your start point was and if you know how far your shot was you can figure out where it landed pretty easy...Well that was the theory behind it....It did not really work as well as advertised....

@StrikerNZ nailed it. I can just point my handheld at it and enter the distance and it will put it on the map. Assuming the others are like this too? Although it will most likely be wasted on me as I don't get the opportunity to use that function.

There’s also another great product out there, forget what it’s called, but they are furry and are your friend and basically smell where the deer is for you. Someone will remember what they’re called. They are powered by meat and biscuits and general rubbish around your house like shoes and broken golf balls.

It depeends on getting a very accurate compass bearing. You can end up quite along way out left or right.

And on taking a couple of minutes to set it up carefully before you rush off looking for the dead deer.

Two other things you should do as a back up are:
Put put a bright marker where you shot from and take a back bearing when you get near spot B.
Take a zoomed in photo of said spot B and use an edit function to draw a mark on it where the deer was. Practice first.

Sounds like what I've been told - I heard that if you are carrying toilet paper then hanging a string of a few pieces in the tree nearest where you shot from means that you don't have to bother going all the way back to get your marker

They have their up sides...but the venting when you get the eat / biscuit ratio wrong can evict people from your car / tent / house..... But well worth the effort

Had one of those too . It was very fond of cats , possums , sheep shit , hole digging , humping strangers legs ... never very really fancied deer though .

The tool you have heard about is the Garmin Fenix wristwatch. It has mapping software and a “project waypoint” function - as you say, point it at deer, enter distance from rangefinder and it places a ‘pin’ on the location.

I have one but prefer to use the NZTopo50 app on my phone, because the screen is so much bigger and the map more detailed. Works much the same way - point phone at deer, drag until the blue label states desired range and hit the “create” button.

You can do that with a garmin 64 etc as well

I normally just stumble around in the failing lights, tripping over logs, slipping on flax, mumbling and cursing, mumble cursing , straight out cursing, saying something like " it should be round here somewhere" then finding it 30 yds in the opposite direction and then busting my foofoo valve carrying out my sustainably harvested free range meat. Bliss

I ask the dog where is it??? It's a humbling experience when they give you the "look" and go where they told you to look an hour ago.
