Giday All....
I’m new to hunting, but I’ve been keen to get a goat and eat it. I know there may be some of you that would say Why would you . That said, I just want to shoot one and try it. I’m after a good spot where I can get one around the Wellington area. Any recommendations on where I can find a solid hunt would be super.
Any sausage ideas would also be welcome as well hahaha

Just remember that Billys and Nanny's taste very different. A Nanny or young one can be cooked (and tastes) very much like mutton / lamb...but Billy goat tastes just like it smells and from what I understand , is best suited to curries (strong / hot ones) or dog tucker if you like the smell of got nasty dog farts.....Billy tends to be tougher and chewier too...

I was you once then I shot a billy, ended up feeding the meat to our chickens. Echo what's said above take a nanny or kid.
I once had a billy made into sausages, the whole house smelt like billy goat every time I cooked those snags up :sick:

I've had luck on public land just picking a river and walking up it but not on first/last light(keep in mind shooting is prohibited in the Orongorongo River).
Wanganui area is loaded with goats if you're willing to drive.
Also it's worth heading to the introductions thread and introduce yourself, you're more likely to get some better intel off people on here if they know a little about who you are.
Any and all of the Oronga side creeks have plenty of stinkies.Take plenty of ammo and lean forward til your barrel has got the heat haze mirage shimmering.Another handy Wgtn spot for them with easy 2wd access is a small DOC block out the back of Makara at Cape Terawiti.Good luck
We had a bunch of Nanny legs meat made into sausages. One of the guys who knew everything, managed to clean and skin a billy leg and put it in the mix. Those sausages were like russian roulette...9 out of 10 mouthfuls were delicious, but every now and the you would bite into a piece of sausage and I swear you could see the bloody thing in front of you the flavour was so strong....Quote:

The one about the random sausage! That was the funniest thing i read in a long time.. I had to read that more than once because i couldn't finish it without passing out from the laughing.
I don't know Wellington that well but I have seen dozens of goats in the hills when biking down the Pencarrow Coast Road. That isn't public land but the Remutaka Forest Park is close by. Surely there must be goats in there?

It's funny, had a leg of goat the other day and just chucked it in the slow cooker for about 7 hours. Tender as, flavour was fine, nothing about it was anything other than perfectly edible. Mate who brought it up was a little sheepish, finally admitted that it was a billy with a 28" set of handle bars. Nothing extravagant but still I had no idea on eating it that it was anything other than prime eating goat.
Slow cookers are a way forward I think!
I recommend cover your goat legs in your favorite rub, smoke for about 3 hours @120°c uncovered.
Slam it in a roasting tray with a small amount of stock then cover in tinfoil and shift into the oven @150°c till it's falling off the bone.
@Alistair82 Its worse than a random sausage...it was a random single bite of any one of the 30kg of sausages......Like finding a single cherry amonst a bowl of fruit salad....There was no way of telling if the next bite would see you staring at him or not..:DQuote:

I got my first goat about 600m from the Remutaka hill rd trig. Have seen plenty in the Cross Creek area, but you need to be 200m from the rail trail which can be gnarly.

If you want to travel for goats head to Wairoa area. My daughters partner has a family owned forest block there where they shot 5000 goats between pine rotations (using P cat AR15's and leaving the goats to rot). Mahia Peninsula has goats everywhere you look. The whole area stinks like billy goat when the wind is right. I don't know the situation about public access but there are so many goats in the area they are a driving hazard.
I must be one of the few people that like hunting goats in the bush. Mainly because of geography and lack of deer I suppose, but also because they aren't difficult to hunt a lot of the time. That said, bush hunting can be tricky and if the goats have been heavily culled, they can get skittish. My family lived on goat meat (and fish) for a few years at least. Not because we had to, but by choice. Ethical, organic meat etc. I select the kids and young nannies to shoot and usually pass on the big stinky billies unless they have a trophy head (few do in my area). A couple of trips to Taranaki was an eye opener in terms of number of animals. The OP could drive a little way north for some guaranteed action.

I am another that likes goat hunting/shooting. Probably knock over 2-300 a year at the moment north of Napier. Take a bit of meat when people want some but I find its great for improving my off hand shooting and shot placement being a target rich environment.Quote:

Living in south Canterbury I actually MISS having goats to hunt.wallabies fill in but just not the same.its a few hours drive to anywhere that is supposed to have hunt able population of goats for me.

Go straight/rightish at the last turn left to the trig. You will pick up a sort of route that leads to the big basins in the eastern creek head waters. Don't drop off the leading spur too much.
Or go past the trig and you can drop to the right and into the some nice country.
Always goats there some where.
Be respectful of day walkers on the track, eh.
