I take it you know of him too @BRADS? Haha
I dont actually know what the farmers name is .
you said his land is the only access point to a paper rd?is this true or disputed?if you have to cross private land to get to an old paper rd the farmer has every right to not want people going across his land and should be pissed off if people are using his land without permission.if it is private land you need to respect that mate-dont push the issue.
Does not having a DOC Permit to hunt on Public Land constitute Illegal Hunting. ?????
This just came through. About as timely as a timely thing:

Landowners can apply to their council to have an unused legal road closed. I think that the process is quite simple and has a low application cost, it does therefore represent a danger to access. A written letter to the council and held on record that proves there is public use of the road will prevent it being closed
Follow the Opawe road thread, or have a look at this media writeup. There is a process that must be followed, and as has happened with the Opawe road, the Public have spoken. And the (paper) road remains.

Yes, and can bring a whole lot of other charges under the Wildlife Act etc
AN interesting point to note I always carry a permit on me. 99% of my hunting is DOC land. In the last 25 years im yet to meet anyone from DOC whilst out in the hills ...
There's a spot not too far from old forestry roads I used to camp near when hunting a particular area (this is all on DOC land).
Most nights I camped there I heard vehicles tearing around the place and gunshots from 1am - 3am. Almost certain to be guys hooning around spotlighting or using thermals to shoot easy pickings.
I wouldn't camp there anymore due to the risk of being accidentally shot when getting up for a piss in the middle of the night.
It would be so easy to catch these guys if there was any real appetite to do so from DOC or the police. I imagine the same thing happens basically anywhere on public land with reasonable 4x4 access.
I reckon NZ needs to step up the penalties for illegal hunting, fishing, diving etc my understanding is its very hard to prosecture / police have little resources to spare for dealing with this kind of carry on.
Doesn't take many to fuck it all up for the rest of us.
There is a group of fellas night hunting TePapanui with thermals and literally filling a refrigerated van with deer carcasses. Shooting everything that moves including young stags.
I’ve seen pictures and it’s pretty shite that future hunting is being buggered up by greedy lazy pricks.
if you have to cross private land then ofc ask for permission or advocate to the walking access commission for access to whatever paper road exists.
However all private land owners are obliged to not interfere with the public accessing the public land using a paper road that is designated as the access to said public land. You can't trespass someone for using a paper road.
it would be a right bastard if whisper of 1080 usage in the areas these "people of lower moral standards" have been targeting were to reach buyer just before they turned up with truck load....
Botulism apparently...
so it wasnt poison...it was poorly handled meat.....
leviticus tells of many foods not to be eaten.....if you look at that list objectively you can see why in a time without refridgeration... pork is very prone to going off in a hurry, havent worked out what he had against the humble hare though...just as well someone dear to me later came along and said its OK to eat them.
having heard first hand accounts of how a certain retailer in Christchurch is/was handling goat carcasses it is actually a wonder there isnt more of this sort of incident/accident.
Animal was killed in an area where 1080 had been used and spent quite a few hours on the top of the dog box in warm weather, never went near a chiller, the Indians probably never chilled the meat either, so whatever gut ache you get from 'hot' pork is what they got.
Prefer to see the animal go to a chiller and end up for consumption than search and destroy or poison.
funnily enough I made just that very same comment a few years ago about a aerial operater poaching on edge of fiordland national park....the poor bugger is probably still rubbing his eyes and undergoing councilling as I heard him coming and ran starkers out onto river flat as they flew back out...passed me at all of 100 yards,my full frontal nudity and bare white skin just couldnt be not seen....
@tetawa I agree. Such a great resource. So much good eating meat wasted.
Jeeeze, one minute I’m having a skim through an interesting thread, next thing it seems to have morphed into a scene of Deliverance.
I haven’t read through all 11 pages just the first and last couple of pages. But this has gone on forever.
In a bizarre coincidence 7mmwsm, appears to be in the South Waikato, and I think Micky Duck was from there too originally? MD?
I too grew up in Tokoroa. Hunting in these more rural towns and cities is a way of life.
Yes it can morph into hunting illegally, today it’s arguably easier. For a few grand you have a thermal, which is infinitely more effective than a motorbike headlight on a battery digging in your back, carried around carefully so the acid didn’t tip on your arse. On a suppressed rifle, you can smack over animals quite close to houses, and if you’re careful which direction you’re shooting, they won’t even know. I’m not endorsing it. Just stating a fact. Yes people can make money from it.
I shot 3 pigs ripping up a mates farm the other evening not 300M from their house. When I got back they asked me if I saw them them. Hadn’t heard a thing. I’d fired 4 shots from a 308 with a DPT sup.
Yes Doc will largely ignore it. They always have.
You have to remind yourself, Doc want all introduced animals gone. ALL GONE. So if someone’s assisting in this, and they’re treading on a grey line, or even acting in an illegal manner, they don’t care.
As MD said, hunt away from roads and the problem diminishes.
Must be something in the Tokoroa water, went to high school there.[/QUOTE
Yes, the waters used to have a particular colour and taste. Haven't been back for over thirty years.
Does the southerly breeze still smell the same?
I don’t think it smells the same. Very mild in comparison. Apparently they used to put some very toxic shit into “settling ponds” out on the way to Mangakino.
God only knows what and where it leached into. Im certain you couldn’t get a way with it today.
Im sure if the fellas in chopper had decided to "net me" my Swedish mate would have given them many rounds of .270 where it would do most good to ensure my freedom......
Tokoroa...yip its in the blood, chlorine that is,my Dad worked in the chlorine plant and my older brother is still a foreman there now....
funny wee story, pun intended...old man forgot to pee in jar for 6 mthly test for chlorine levels so he got me to pee in it for him...and the levels were one of highest in plant LOL.....Mum did use a fair bit of "janola' around the home.
