James Andrew Pomeroy, 31, was fined $5000 in the Nelson District Court in December for unlawful hunting on private land in the Gowan Valley. Pomeroy admitted not having permission to hunt on the property but said it was one of his companions who fired the shot at the deer, and that he was there to recover the shot animal. The judge ordered the destruction of Pomeroy's hunting knife.

Look at the conviction for the guy caught with a rifle but no licence. not even jail time!

That is seriously fucked up. Stealing, while armed. Just fucking great. Judge needs a size twelve boot up the arse

Maybe the knife was special?!? I bet that taught him, at least the fine would have hurt a bit.

On the other case:
Unlawful possession of a firearm... AND it was only confiscated??? Gee what did he learn from that one.

Someone needs to start dishing out realistic punishments. No surprises that this is a problem.

I don't know what the relevance of the type of gear they are using has to do with it. Not to mention the incorrect use of terminology with regard to suppressors. Agree, poaching is no good. But this report focuses too much on demonising legitimate equipment.

Only terrorists and poachers need night vision anyway. And LandSAR so join your local branch.

Just a thought, landowners and farmers could make use of this technology to catch poachers very easily.

We sell heaps of NV and thermal kit to farmers and landowners, for pest control and security. Our equipment has enabled farmers to catch poachers red handed on several occasions, and not one of the poachers caught were using NV/Thermal. Farmers and landowners benefit from a safe and effective means of reducing pests, from rats to crop raiding deer.

To say that only terrorists and poachers need NV/Thermal is rubbish. Night hunting is a sport enjoyed by many of our clients, including several police officers. It is to hunting, what searun trout fishing is to trout fishing. Exciting and productive (sometimes). I love it, and it's really convenient to get out for a night hunt after I've been bollocksing myself at work all day.



Lose NV/Thermal, then suppressors and semi-automatics will be next. Just take a long hard look at Australia firearm laws.

As far as I am aware, no poaching convictions have arisen through the use of NV/Thermal. Not being able to catch poachers does not automatically mean that this technology is in use. Sure, there may be a few that will poach with this equipment, but there are strong laws in place that make this a very risky enterprise.

Can we have a heated discussion over 'what is mil-spec?', in regards to military-grade gear?

Anything of lower grade than sporting gear?

So Yukon, any of the thermal stuff you sale is of that quality or lower?

All ours are 30Hz and 50Hz. (1hz = 1 frame per second).

50Hz PAL is the best format currently available, not withstanding ultra high frequency, cryogenically cooled MCT (HgCdTe) thermal systems, that are produced for NATO, NASA etc by SofradIR, who own ULIS, who make all the a-Si thermal sensors that our thermals are are fitted with.
