    January Tahr

Im going to be down in Southland for Xmas with the family, wife and kids flying down I'm driving from Palmy.
I have allowed myself 10 days from when the family fly home to make/hunt my way up the South Island.
Am working on 4-5 days somewhere in the Lewis pass with a mate, that leaves another few days left somwhere in between.
Was thinking a tahr hunt for a few days would be epic just no idea of where to start (wallabies would be a bonus as I haven't hunted either species much.
The Gamack block caught my eye for tahr, was thinking of going in through the Braemar/landslip creek easement and hunting the NW area away from Jollie hut as i figured there would be less people around.
Does anyone have any info on the area? or tips on other areas worth a look?
Will be solo but have a 4wd, not worried about staying out the night.

Further to that if anyone wants to tag along or go for a mission let me know.

    Thanks
    Bryce

No you can’t drive the gate is locked . It gets a bit of pressure from the shepherds that work there as it’s pretty easy for them to glass from the Ute . Best bet is to put your boots on and walk up the jollie , glass from the riverbed . You’ll be surprised what you’ll come across . It’s a decent walk to the head of the valley and worth taking the tent ..

Hey Bryce! The Gamack block sounds great, and avoiding Jollie Hut should help with crowding. You might also check out Makarora or Haast Pass for tahr. Good luck and enjoy the trip!
