    Jap Creek

Heading into Jap creek for the first time on Friday for a few days chasing Sika. Done plenty in the Kaimanawas but always wanted to get into here, We will follow our nose but was wondering if there are any established campsites in the catchment that are good for a couple of tents that you’ve come across? Pm is sweet if you don’t want to advertise locations publicly here.

Will post up a TR once out

As you walk along from the Oamaru Hut to Jap Creek (Ruatea Paimai Stream) there’s plenty of good size camping spots at the confluence where it meets the Oamaru River which is what I think Friwi is referring to.

Walking up Jap Creek to where it branches out will take a few hours so allow plenty of time.

At the confluence there wasn’t much of a camp site but I tended to be there by myself and I camped just down from the confluence where the old hut used to be, heli sika cut an LZ around 10 years back in order to land up there.

I would suggest finding a spot just before the confluence if your after a spot for two or more tents.

Just be mindful of the weather, when Jap Creek floods your basically going to have to climb up and over Rouiti to get out.

I haven't been up there for years but we camped past Jap creek beside main river between the track to Boyd and the river.
From what I remember is only all flat areas up Jap creek unless you camp where the old hut was. There may be a bigger area up there.

In times long ago used to wander into there from the top end of North Arm, then wander up the Oamaru to Boyd track, up a side creek and back in to North Arm opposite Blue Duck creek, was a great spring walk.
