You just need to walk a bit further at Boyds to get away from the nongs. Cross the river (it involves getting your feet wet) and head up pretty much anywhere.
As for the track being too steep to the hut...well...I'm speechless on that one. A lot of private huts have steeper approaches to them than Boyds. Its just all part of the experience.
Oamaru public is really a hot spot for Sika. Lots of private land acting as a feeder. Once again, all you really have to do is get off your arse.
Thanks for that Im actually Happy as bro. Dont worry we crossed the river alright. No one was sitting on their arse at all. Boots were wet the whole time there evryone was jostling for space close to the fire to attempt to dry them.We were out in the dark and back in the dark. And off the track I might add way up as well as at the bottom of it all. We even did an overnight walk up river to. At the hut never heard a bird or anything whole time we were there. As I said I was the junior on this with guys who have been hunting 30 years or longer and their comments were oops we have come to the wrong place... Side note whilst there a guy flew himself in covered his plane up and headed away for two days sleeping out. Came back and said he doubted he d bother doing that again . So whatever thats my experience of the place as well as seeing animals harvested at Oamaru by spotlight two per night but none during day light hours too many people and thats not my cuppa.
