    Kaikouras

Going to be in town later in the week as part of our new SI caravan tour.

Is there much point taking the rifle on a trip up Mt Fyfe? Not sure how much time I'll have at this point but might try and get an overnight trip to the hut.

Off to Chch after that then destinations unknown depending on where the weather and the fancy takes us. On the road until end August.

    Cheers

Sounds like the West Coast: fresh deer prints right under the State highway bridges

Bush up there is loaded if you feel like stalking. Can be pretty knarly and steep in places though.

Hunting mates and friend who live there tell tales of isolated little pockets of fallow around, more goats than you can shake a stick at. Most deer seem to be shot on the back of farms but that's because it's a town where everyone knows everyone so there's always easy land to hunt on. Plenty of reds in the public land around the Muzzle station area from what I've heard too.

Can confirm this, had them on the farm I used to work on at the bottom of Mt Fyffe. They were off limits to shoot for us though as only a handful of them compared to reds

Went for a wander today started up the Kowhai then a side creek, thick soaking wet bush and a hell of a lot of deer sign, some so fresh it was steaming but nothing actually seen though. Came down the MTB track in the dark. Still had a good difficult walk in a new area so relatively happy.

Off to Christchurch in the morning then possibly Geraldine around mid week at this point.

You are actually almost lucky you didn't shoot anything. Last time I was successful in that area, it was so difficult it was easier to go down to the river the long way, TWICE, Just to carry the boned meat out. I would do it again tho. Very character-building episode

Had some good luck up the Jordan and Clinton. Saw some big stags on the Clinton a few years back, spooked them across the stream 20m away from me. I was kicking myself so hard.
