I haven't been hunting up thee so can't say about deer/
If you're coming from the Thomsons track saddle (the easiest way, I'm sure) the track is quite easy. It actually cuts up from the 700, past the air crash site, through the u of Ngatamahinerua on the map to a small saddle on the main range, then sidles on the east across a slightly greasy rock slab on a slip then is well cut up to the plateau. It's a bit boggy on the top but easy to follow. The hut is on a side track about 100 - 150m east off the main North South track. The side track isn't super easy to follow in the dark, more or less runs on the line of a small creek. I suggest try and locate the helipad and hut on google earth, mark it as a place then transfer to your GPS. Missing hunter found 'tired and cold' - National - NZ Herald News
Its an old hut but a good one w 3 bunks. There is a fireplace but no wood to burn - all trees are too small and wet and no big treefalls to supply firewood (take a stove and dry clothes). It's a great view from the loo.
