My intentions were to hunt just northeast of Waitawheta hut over that flat bit as seen on topo maps (~590m elevation) and drop back onto the track travelling west. Whats peoples thoughts on this, obviously a waste of time as suggested by Bonecrusher?

I can't help you with information on the area you want to hunt as I have never been there...the main reason being I don't think there are many animals there...my son did some work on the hut and tracks over there some years ago and seen no sign at all. I have an old hunting mate living over that way and in the last 20 years has only heard of a couple of animals showing themselves. Of course there could be shitloads now as it gets little hunting pressure.
