Hi, has anyone been up the in kaimais recently, somewhere around Mangamuka hut - any deer up there or fresh sign? Been up by the mangamuka hut a couple times and wondering if its worth heading up there for one of the coming weekends? TIA

Yep been around mangamuka track a week ago, heaps of sign, saw a fawn and spooked what sounded like 3 big-bodied animals crashing through the supplejack.
Plenty of deer everywhere up there.
Go for it
Ive been up there a couple of times over the summer but not seen any deer. Its very nice bush there - totally good on a fine day. Some sign but not heaps. The key would be to spend plenty of time stalking and off track eg 8-12 hr for a weekend would give you a good chance.
Overall it seems quite a popular place now. People do come in with dogs from the Katikati side so the west could be more favourable if you dont use one. Also there are pink marked trails all across the area for pest control which wil be keeping the deer on their toes. I’d suggest looking off the main plateau or wherever you can get away from the pink markers.
