Thread: Kaimais (Thompson Track W.A.M.S)

Good evening guys,

I was wondering if someone could help me with the Thompson's track area and the legality of hunting in the area.
I have been looking at the said track through the W.A.M.S site trying to get an idea of what areas I could and could not go.
I found that a large portion of the ground is not marked as Public Conservation Land. In fact, this area isn't marked as anything.
Could someone please tell me if it is possible to hunt this area. The last thing I want to do is be 'that' ignorant prick who finds himself where he shouldn't be.

I've never hunted the area before - but the 4wd track seems like a nice and easy to walk access point so I figured I'd give it a go.

Not much help sorry. Who's the forum member who lives at the base of the Waikato side of the track? @Spook?

Have a read of http://www.nzhuntingandshooting.co.n...tml#post434477 - my understanding is the forestry bits are no-go.

Have you looked at the map on DOC site?

Thanks for the replies guys. @peril 787b, yeah I checked the DOC site but it wasn't so clear.
I had a decent browse and tried to get everything aligned (using both the topomap and the supplied doc map), and if I'm right, it looks like most of that area is out of bounds.
The image was really distorted because the maps that they give you are pretty shite.

Ignore this shitty map and refer to your first two screenshots. In this case the green 'Conservation Land' IS the open permit hunting area.

I've been that idiot in the wrong place, There is a track that branches off the Tompson's track that takes you up to the tops from that forestry area, follow the track up to your left, it is about 30m of a sign that says Thopson's track, you will be walking through the processed forest along the track, passes a big swamp area with reeds and vegetation, straight ahead is the sign and to your left is a slip way, follow that up and you will find a nice track up to the tops through the trees. The area below 588 has just been processed. Basically if your in pine or processed pine you're in the wrong spot. Def have a look at the Thompson's Track Condition thread

Simple rule of thumb there is if you are on the Waikato side of the Kaimais or in exotic, pine or felled areas - you're most likely still in private land - hunt from the tops over to the Katikati side

Thanks for the replies guys. I'll try and head up sometime later next week to stretch the legs and will write a report after my trip. Looks like she's going to be a fairly muddy walk in. After this trip, I'll head in to the Whakamarama ways and write up a report about that after as well. Thanks for all the help guys.

Hey Daniel, Spook is most definitely the man on the scene but I doubt he is about this forum very much now. Older fella with a cracking beard and lived there for a long long time.
If you park up at the start to Thompson's track Spooks gate is to the left.
If you are heading in it pays to know they have been in feeling trees in the last little while and while they should be out by now there is still a chance that the road will be close to where you want to get to.
Walking in from Waikato side is about 6k's to the hunting area amd while most of it is easy you will have to make your way through the 4x4 tracks and there is a very good chance you're going to get muddy (you're going to get muddy!). There are some very big holes with lots of mud and not much land to get around them- good luck!
If you come in from the Tauranga side you still follow the tracks to the tops but a little quicker and you won't run in to logging operations. Once at the top you will see a good few clearings that are worth checking out and try and head up to the very top and check out the hundred acres area.
You may also like to try hunting from Old Kaimai road as there are a few clearings/ skid sites heading in that can yield some animals or there is also heading up Wairere Falls which is just a little further south from Thomson's and a step walk up the steps to the tops, last year a few wallows and some nice clearings that would be worth checking out again.

The doc website couldn't be any clearer about where the permit allows you to hunt. If you choose to hunt outside of these areas you're likely to be poaching. the permit only covers you for the open hunting area on the permit and no where else.


Sorry for blunt reply, but there's not much more to it than that. Go online and play with the doc gis maps...they're pretty good, and if you hunt the areas on the map you are legally covered.

@kimjon thanks for that. I knew that there were legal boundaries. I just wanted to be absolutely damn sure that I was within them. The map that I had provided was from the DOC site under the hunting permit section. It was crap so I asked for help. Didn't know they had a gis map. Thanks for pointing that out. I'll have a play with it tonight.
