Desert Road State Highway 1 closure: Tūrangi to Waiōuru closed for two months

Looks like I won't be heading up the Umukarikari any time soon.

Not correct I believe you can still access doc tracks and campsites.

Not sure how that works in practice with all traffic being diverted at Waiouru and Turangi. If you wanted to get to Kaimanawa rd from Turangi for example you would need to talk to the guys manning the site where traffic is diverted. Happy to be proved wrong through !!

They are a holes got through but you need defensive driving no cones diggers and dirt piles on Desert Road. Traffic management said if gates locked when you come out tough luck you're locked in. Two sets of information I talked to them about DOC campsites they said not our problem. From what I saw and lack of safety management Road is going to be closed.
