    Kaimanawas Trip

Hey team. Planning a 3 day trip into the Kaimanawas next weekend if the weather looks ok. Just after some info in regards to track times and hunting. First option is to head over Te Iringa from Clements Mill and hunt around the swingbridge and up the Kaipo / Tikitiki. Second option is head into Oamaru and camp an hour up the Kaipo from the hut and hunt around there. I will be using an indicating dog, hence why I won't be staying at the hut. Have been into oamaru and hunted the flats and towards jap creek but haven't been that far up the Kaipo, let alone as far as the swingbridge. Didn't have a going dog when I last went into Oamaru so just wondering what the bush is like in the general area. Also how many hours is it up the river from Oamaru hut to the swingbridge? Any general info on bush and times would be greatly appreciated. Cheers

Couple hours from the Oamaru up to the swing bridge. You’re walking past good hunting the whole way both sides of the river. Although the hunting around the swing bridge is really good aswell. My advice would be to pick a km grid or two to hunt on the map that you like the look of and stick with it with the wind in mind. If you and the dog do your bit right you’ll get into animals

Shot a hind in there weekend before last. There’s deer everywhere through there. Make a plan of where you think they’ll be then find out how to get there with the wind right. Wind was a bastard when I was in there. The SE pattern that we’ve been having dies out in the hills and it can go whatever direction it feels like. Supposed to be westerly next weekend so that’s a bit more predictable.

Give us an update on how it goes.
