    Kawaka access from the North

Looking at heading into northern kawekas at some point. If coming down from Taupo on SH5, is there access without having to drive almost into Napier ?
I see there are lots of roads that are supposedly public access, but which seem to go into forestry blocks, which in my limited expereince usually means locked gates.

No is the short answer. Unless you want to walk through poronui via Boyds and the Harkness valley

Yep. Stop at helisika and jump in a chopper. You'll be in the kawekas in 5 mins.

Bit too far to walk going via Boyds, and i am a lowly paiter of houses so jumping in a chopper to get to somewhere I can drive to is not on my list of options at the moment, unfortunately .

Turn off SH5 onto Glengarry road (signposted to the nudist club). That's the quickest way I know of.

Thanks Shearer. I am sure that Glengarry has been mentioned to me as access for somewhere else too, but cant remember where. But then soemone suggested that there may be a locked gate so I dismissed it as a no go, as I dont want to drive all that way to find I cant get in.

Turn right into Glengarry Road off SH5 follow to the end and turn right again then follow your nose.

Potter road is closer but runs through Crohaine station and is a private road likely to have locked gates on it.

Where are you going in the Kaweka?

    Cheers
    Pete

    Nice spot.
Watched a hind in a creek bed for about 20 minutes last time I was up there. Got this long distance photo.

It's a bit of a walk from Makahu. The creek to the south of Dicks spur.

    Know it well.

Deer centre of photo about a third the way up.

I believe I seen a deer there back in the 80's

Loved camping at Kaweka flats although 4 to the box was a bit of a squeeze.

    Cheers

Haha. You are obviously not red/green colour blind. I have real trouble seeing deer in their summer coat against a green background. They don't stand out at all to me.
