    Korohi Bivvy / Rangatikei hut.

Morning I'm hoping someone might have some info on this Kaimanawas block for the roar.

I know my profile doesn't have to many posts but I live in Perth now and used to be an avid member on the old fishnhunt forum, hunting Uraweras and Otago while at uni.

Ill be be flying in 10th April with my bro and father for 4 nights and none of us have never hunted Sika before so decided to grab whatever private block we could and try get as far from the road as possible.

Even any Kaimanawas sika info in general would be awesome.

I'll be happy to return the favour if anyone's ever in Western Australia and wants to go chase a marlin.

    Cheers

Buy an AJ productions sika caller and a couple of sika cards for it

Hopefully they're calling and you can find them and start climbing to them, It's pretty steep in there!

Thanks Sika 8, it does look steep in there ! Iv gathered that stag will hold with hind down below the bushline and climbing all the way to tops could be a waste of time ?

Do they go hard like a red when they are on ?

    Cheers

You might want to buy this book before you come on over... from back in the day but really helps explain sika hunting. That and banging your head on a tree multiple times... The Sika Hunters by Neil Philpott

They'll be on the Bush ridges & you'll need to climb up to them without being winded, there are a lot of deer in there you'll see a lot i reckon.

It's right next to the REZ which gets very little pressure from hunters as its a long walk & there is no fly ins, huts or tracks, the Sika foundation did a cull there not long ago but there will still be loads in there.

That sounds promising ! I think there's the option to get dropped up top on fly in day so we can hunt back down but obviously we will have to climb back up each day. Hopfully I can find a wallow to set up a cam for the few days we are there also.

Was in there mid march 2 years ago. Hunted the tops, stags where still in velvet but getting hard. They where all feeding up hard pre rut in the tussock. First morning stopped counting at 30 stags seen, every gut seemed to have a group in it. Just over an hr from the biv to the bushline. Bush was pretty easy going for the most part. Just steep in places, pick your routes with care.

Suspect once the rut starts theyll all move down on to the bush spurs.

    Good luck.

That ridge ends up in some tiger country up high. I went down stream of the biv to first side creek coming from the east (200m is down stream?), then up ridge on southern side of the side creek. Hopefully that makes sense...

I've done at least three trips in there in the roar, I've got close friends that hunted it for about 10 years straight so they guided me a bit.

I'm an impatient hunter so went for the tops. The tops on the western side are the best, easiest way up is the ridge/spur to the south of the Hut, you scramble around a steep part from the Hut to get to the spur without crossing the creek and come out on a beautiful plateau.

My mates always hunted the bush and did well, take binos so you can look through the layers of the bush. The eastern side of the valley seemed to be the easiest to bush stalk.

    Don't expect big heads.

PM me if you want so.e specific info or routes.

Went there in mid April 2016, river up there is absolutely stunning but found it hard hunting. The party that came out when we arrived had shot a stag and i believe the party that came in when we left got a stag also. my mate shot a hind and got close to couple of stags but no luck and much the same for me. But would happily go back there.

Hopfully there's a few more deer around when we head in, can you remember what it was like travelling up and down river to get away from the hut ? I know there a group in before us for 5 nights so I can imagine the close valleys will see a bit of pressure.
