    Lake Waikeremoana hunting

Hey guys first time poster to this awesome page, after many years of awesome information gathered. So I am looking at doing a trip into lake waikeremoana hunting for a few days. Been looking around this forum and had a look at launching my little 10ft dingy from somewhere and puttering out into the distance somewhere and set up a flycamp spending a few days exploring. Any tips on where to launch dinghy and head towards would be immensely appreciated. Cheers guys and girls

I think there is usually no hunting allowed for part of the year (and all year in some areas), due to all the trampers doing the Great Walk.
That said, the Great Walk is apparently closed for the rest of the season, so there is a small chance it might be open for hunting?

You should be able to find out on the Tuhoe website

I think the area is currently fully closed due to the lake levels being 30% over the maximum height so a lot of the access trails are completely flooded. Also the road from Murupara is currently closed, as is the road from Wairoa. Last time I looked no eta on opening, but in months not weeks as bridges and underslips as well as the overslips that are just a clean up...

    - I have turned back from home bay in a 24 foot heavy alloy with 225 hp on the back due to lake conditions - your boat severely restricts you to a short distance and a very short trip indeed - just be bloody carefull -if you can go then launch from Mokau campsite and hunt south of the old Wanganui hut i.e straight across the Wanganui arm - there is a big feed face there should hold deer -

As others stated lake can cut up very rough very quickly and not somewhere you want to be caught out. Take away the fact that roads are closed atm you must stay at a designated camp site around the lake and can not just take the boat and park up where ever unfortunately. Mokau is a good base and can take boat from there. Some great bush hunting to be had all around there.

Also i dont think that you are permited to rock up and camp some where. You will get a visit from the Iwi managing the resource and also a fine for not booking to stay on a camp even ( had this happen to me about 4 years ago things may have changed)
