Late January Chamois and Thar hunt

Hi everyone,

My partner and I have been hunting in New Zealand for a week now, but unfortunately, we haven’t had much luck so far.

We started hunting north of Lake Coleridge, where we saw plenty of tracks and signs of Chamois activity. However, the terrain was far too steep and inaccessible for us to navigate safely.

Next, we tried the area around the Twizel River, which was beautiful, but we didn’t spot any animals. Unfortunately, the trip was cut short due to severe rashes on my feet.

We’re now gearing up for another try, and our goal is to spot—and hopefully have a chance to harvest—a Chamois and a Tahr before heading back to Norway on February 14th.

If anyone has recommendations for public land areas with good animal activity and terrain that’s reasonably accessible on foot, we would be incredibly grateful for your advice.

We need more info.

Do you want to use a hut? Or camp in a tent? How many hours walk can you do? How many days do you have for the hunt?

Have a look in the Cameron, Sth Branch Ashburton, Potts area, country is a tiny bit easier than some East coast Southern Alps

The range up above Roxborough, I've taken Chamois up there before, of there is a place up here in Tasman I know of.

All depends on where you are and where you are headed really.

We are very flexible since we’re renting a car and can travel anywhere on the South Island. We also have the gear needed to stay in the mountains for several days.

We’re hoping to find terrain that isn’t too inaccessible on foot—ideally no more than 10 km hiking distance. A hut would be a bonus, but it’s not a necessity.

After hours of glassing and many kilometers of hiking, I’ve finally taken my first tahr bull!
Huge thanks to everyone who helped me find good terrain!

Now, I have a question—does anyone know of a taxidermist who can do a shoulder mount and arrange for the trophy to be shipped to Norway? Alternatively, if no taxidermist is available, is there anyone around Christchurch who could help me boil and prepare the skull so I can bring it home on my flight?

We’re leaving on Sunday, February 16th, so I need to get this sorted fairly quickly.

I was there in Oct, no feed there then, bare as a baby's bottom it was, but did get to within 7 MTRS of a bull with the bow to be busted by the fickle wind.
