Hmmm still got antlers on. I did shoot one mid November a couple of years back with antlers. All of the male deer reds I've seen lately have dropped, including spikers!! I saw a nice red stag last week who'd already put up all his lower points and was growing the tops out and had about 60-70cm of length on each antler already...that's some serious velvet growth for this time of year on a wild deer.

Do you have to take the whole animal out or can you bone it out in the field?
Going by the weight I take you took it all out

Nice Stag, I'd be keen to hear more about hunting in the UK in regards to rules, laws, permits etc. Do you have to draw tags and hunting blocks to drop Red deer?

    Hi all,
Ryan, I am Welsh , but live in England at the mo, until I move to NZ in April .
Sako, we always take the whole animal out, our woods are not as remote as yours. I use a drag tray, as my days of carrying the out at that size are over
One shot, all land is private so no tags, we have seasons for males and females, deer on your land are yours, we can sell them to game dealers if you are a trained hunter (one day course) no semi,s above 22 rimfire, and you need a firearms license.

Shoot whatever and whenever is IMHO going to ruin NZ deer quality in the wild. We need some seasonal control otherwise all the summer stags in velvet will either get cleaned up by WARO or hunters.
