Kia Ora boys and girls,
It happened last year and I've been meaning to post it up for ages, but I finally nailed one! Still not the Sika on public land I'd been chasing all year, but it was a deersie none the less and my first back steaks I'd nabbed myself. After all the hard work, camping in the snow, getting the truck stuck, traveling up and down the country, falling over in the river with my pack on, almost bluffed on the side of a cliff in the Ruahines etc etc......
Anyways, it was southerly here in little ol' Gisborne, and the bro was like yeah.....na.....yeah.....maybe, reckon it'll be worth a look?......so we were off around lunchtime and by the time we got in there, quadbike unloaded etc there was only a few hours left to luck in. Anyways we'd headed off down the track, bit of sun poking through, bit cold, bit windy, but I could tell if we got down to the bottom of the gully there wouldn't be to much wind and on the right side, the sun would be shining down on some tasty grassy clearings and maybe, just maybe there'd be some living and breathing venison's hanging about.
So we get down close to the bottom of the gully. On one side of the river looking through the bush as we headed down on the bike I could see the sun beaming through on some clearings on the bush edge on the other side of the river. Hopped off the bike and a quick scramble through and..... wholly sh#$.....one deersie soon became two! .......and just right there! .....across the river!.... right where they should be on a day like that day!
So us two are (very quietly) jumping round like two retards trying to f$%k a door knob while some unsuspecting bambi is feeding away on the other side of the river. So I'm squirreling round trying to get a good rest, but there's just nothing to use and I'm peaking out because its a little way away for my first shot and its me first deer. Anyhoo, I have to take the shot in the rifle man pose and I'm thinking, sh#$ !!! my hearts racing and the rifles moving all over the shop, but somehow I calmed myself down long enough to let the thing turn broadside and get a shot off.......and it drops......and its up....no its down.....no its up.....and then......no its down!!!!!!!!
Geez....sitting here reliving it all again, it was heart in the mouth stuff! Couldn't believe I'd hit the thing let alone shot it right where I was aiming!!! just above the shoulder right through the engine room. Too much alright. So gut it get it back to the bike. strap the ol' girl to the bike and take all the rounds out for the ride home. (rookie mistake)
So we're riding back up the hill chuffed as mustard right on dark when wholly crap, a borris, out of know where, screams down in front of the bike and off down the bank. Rounds go back in the gun, and we keep going up the hill another 100m and pull over to have a look at this other clearing. Five little piggies at the market.........feeding away not a care in the world! Now its cuzzies turn, and the pressures on......its almost too dark to see em' through the scope and once again I'm thinking sh$% that must be fair way away for a shot......but he has a rest on the fence and......boom......right on the shoulder, through the engine room and out the otherside under the arm! By the time we get down there its pitch black and he's jumping round like he's just won the lottery!!!
Cold beers all round and grins a mile wide.........and a day I won't forget in a hurry with a good mate.
Cheers
