About 20 years ago we were dropping down to the beach (from the south) and a guy with a rifle came running towards us.
He had spotted a doe in the dunes above the beach and asked us to wait in the bush so we didn't spook her. We waited until we heard a shot plus a bit longer. This would have been around midday or early afternoon in late February, so expect deer at any time.

Used to be a cool beach camp/fishing rubbish hut just up 100m or so from the river mouth. Not sure if it is still there or not?
Quite a few good sized kokopu in the creek
Its great country this should wet your appitite

I believe there is a Hunters trust hut there now?

I went a few years ago, part of a 21 day trip of hunting and diving (you can do that when you're a uni student).

We stayed at little Hellfire for ten days. Heaps of deer in the dunes. But that was when there was no hut and the plane couldn't land there. I think it might be a bit different now, but I'm sure the deer will still be around.

The hut at Little Hellfire is four years old. https://www.rhct.org.nz/index.php/little-hellfire to bivvy is long gone.
There is also a recent online report from Litle Hellfire but its location now eludes me.
