I'm running 165 federal trophy bonded tips out of my 17" with 2208, seems to be effective out to 250 on most animals even though its only going 2410fps. Looking to use it to a max range of 400

    Federal blue box.

They are a small deer for a 308.

Speer 150 btsp will work down to 1800 fps which is over 400 yards in a 308, but really on a little fallow maybe as the guys above say a monolith bullet like the tsx will save a lot of meat.

I have thought about this a lot as I mostly hunt the Blueys and just use my .308.

Use 2206H as it goes well in the short barrel. Any soft 150gr bullet would be ideal. Some have mentioned lighter weight bullets, personally I wouldn't use them.

I actually think @Marty Henry is on the money with soft round nose 150gr bullets for a .308 that is dedicated to close to moderate range shooting on fallow. I have a box of Speer 150gr RN sitting in the draw for this very purpose. I just don't use them as my .308 is my everything rifle, so I go with 165gr SP or SSTs, which of course kill fallow just fine.

Plus another one for the Speer 130 grain HP. They just work.

Yea that, they are all that is needed on Fallow sized game at those ranges.
If wanting to save meat 130grttsx would be a good option.

I ran 165gr Sierra HPBT gamekings with 46gr of 2208 out of my 16.5" tikka 308 at around that 2600fps mark and smashed fallow up close and out to 200m(the one at 200m never took a step). Mate used it out to nearly 500yds on tahr and it dropped 2 bulls plus a chamois and 300yds~. Tried SSTs but not impressed speed and accuracy wise

Anyone know where you could get a list of what powders are used in factory ammo? I've been using hornady SST 150 in my 16. Goes fine but would like to know if there's something faster burning that might be better

hornady loads are a bit difficult to duplicate as they blend powders..the superpreformance powder we can buy is only one of a number they use . the .308 in my cabinet happy with 2208 or win 748....they arent fussy to feed.

So its hard to know what's in that hornady stuff then mickey? Can we tell what's in the others? Is there anyone making up loads if you send some shells? I kind of like the idea of a round that can shoot well out to 400 with a saving if a couple of inch's in the drop. Not stress about close as any quick expanding bullet works for me.

try a 20 pack from belmont in wanganui.....if your rifle likes them buy a hundy and be happy maybe you might be better served with a 165ish grn pill as they seem to be the flavour for slightly longer range.

How fast? I’m using the 130’s at 3000 FPS.

To the OP, at that distance I’d just use the most accurate load and head shoot them. Watch Waikeremoana’s YouTube videos. They use .22 centre fires and head shoot them all.
