Thread: Locating shot deer using your GPS - long(ish) range shooting

Any info on here or anyone in the know on the process for this, think I have it in my head but someone might be in the know, looking over open pockets of clay pans in a mass of Kanuka/ Manuka has me thinking it'll be hard to find them when needed, cheers in advance

i know for my garmin you cant mark a waypoint unless you are actually there. can take a bearing but not much use unless you want to go in a straight line

A number of the modern Garmin units have a function called "project waypoint".

Using this, provided the onboard compass is accurately calibrated, you can point your GPS at the kill, and tell it to make a waypoint XX yards in that direction. You should already have the distance from the shot..

Always check on the map to make sure this new waypoint looks roughly in the right place.


The other option is just to look on the GPS map and go "that spot looks like the right one" and plonk a waypoint there.

That would be bloody incredibly handy for finding clearings across gullys - wonder if my garmin 62s has that feature. Might be too old

Yes. Hit the mark button, then the menu button. Select the "project a waypoint".

Just don't do what I did. Projected the waypoint with the ranged distance, not the over the ground distance. Line of sight distances with an angle are less in your GPS 2D map. So much so that I never found the jap spiker I shot that day. Looked easy as to get down to

more importantly - did you get out this weekend? i ended up doing landscaping and tramp building (usually like working on tramps!)

Yep I use the sight in go feature.

You can also estimate the distance using the projected way point.

Change the 's' and the 'p' round and that will solve your issues. IE get a dog...

Well, thanks for that ! I've never used Project Waypoint before. It's under "Sight and Go". Also you can project a waypoint from a previously saved waypoint in "waypoint manager". This is on my garmin oregon It will also drop a waypoint wherever you want it.

I've found it very hard to identify the right side gully / spur using contours alone.

A GPS or phone with satellite images, select a tree/bush edge/pan etc, is better but you need to preload them.

It's a bit tricky to get a real accurate bearing using a silva compass. Would you take a prismatic compass you can sight through ? Maybe the compass on your phone held against the rifle barrel - would that work ?

I guess to get over the slope problem you could use a TBR function on the range finder.

Wont be very exact but enough to get you in the right gully.

I wouldn't put any compass near the rifle barrel if a reliable bearing is needed
