Hi all,
I'm needing a pair of binos, all my hunting is sub >400m usually in the bush
I have no clue what I'm looking at and what to buy, I see Leopold 10×42 BX1s and they seem not bad for the price?
What would you guys recommend in the sub $500 range? Should I get 8x 10x 12x etc I understand more light in dusk and dawn is better but you also get what you pay for and that's the extent of my knowledge, so if you could help a brother out that'd be mean

I had 8X weaver compacts and they were good but went up to 10X Weaver compact and never looked back- now the Weaver are good rubber coated and optics fine - but then look thru a pair of Leica and no comparison- the Leica are just up another level but you will pay for them- swarovski compacts are right up there to _ in the budget range impressed with the Nikon they are good optics - stick to 10X and you wont go wrong - just better definition than 8X - 12X likely to hard to hold steady
If its for predominately the bush, then stick with 8X or even down to 7X, gives you a greater field of view for looking in close. And you wont notice the lack of an extra 2X when you start glassing a bit further away. If youre concerned about weight stick with the x30 or x32, but x40mm will give you better light gathering for under the bush or at the duller times of day.
For sub-400m, I would go 8x or less for best FOV and brightness in the bush.
Personally, I’d grab the Nikon 8x42s that Chainsaw has in the buy/sell on here, although 8x30/32 would be a bit lighter if that’s a concern.
Happy as pig in pooh with my Bushnell 10x set. BIG consideration for bush hunting is ...will they fit in tit pocket??? If they won't,they will stay in pack or at home. Mine fit in pocket of my butcher coat...perfect
And little compacts are better than nothing,but not much.

so lower magnification, compact and light are key points. thanks for the help. now to find some spots near Hamilton now that I've moved here....
