Thread: Lots of hinds around, someone should shoot them.

Been sick so trolling through YouTube for videos. Came across this joker who seems to have a good channel. Started by watching his latest video and couldn’t finish it.

In the first 4 minutes he says:

‘Seen 60 or 70 deer… (and only) three young stags… need to have a bit of a cull’

‘Where’s the stags at?… seen about 60 hinds, which need to be shot…’

‘After seeing 60 odd deer and (only) 3 stags… its always that tough point of, do you shoot a hind and scare a big stag’

(They were walking for the first full day so wouldn’t have scared anything).

‘We need to try and do out bit, take a couple of hinds, at some point’

Maybe im just a bit quick to judge because of the manflu and definitely not trying to vilify the guy but he could probably do with some constructive public encouragement (comments) from other hunters to do his part in managing deers numbers.

Ha, I started a PM on here asking for a general direction on where to find hinds in numbers like these for a blast-up, but didn't end up sending it. I'm not too motivated by big heads, so I'd be keen on a few days doing our bit on herd mgmt.

I did say I totally get the thinking around the massive investment in time/cost to get there, and how frustrating it would be to scare off a cracking stag for the sake of culling a few hinds out of a massive herd... so no dramas there for me.

with luck he will chime in and let us all know where these 60 hinds are..better be quick as due to start fawning any day now.

He actually posted that link on this forum last week. I think I might know where it is but not my place to say.

I'd imagine if my mates and I had spent possibly thousands of dollars and time off work to get in to a spot for a representative stag as the goal that shooting a few hinds in the interests of conservation wouldn't pass mustard. They were most likely not set up to "cull" animals.

When I saw the number of hinds on the video I drew the same conclusion that he did. They need to be managed. But when your back pack hunting your just not set up to do this.

He's always been ethical in how he displays his hunts and often about the animals he's turned down in other videos for the chance of a great stag.

I would never expect someone to reveal a spot publicly either. I'm sure those experienced in that region will know where it is.

Lots of animals in the Kaimai's, whereas deer used to be seen in one's and two's, they are now quite often seen in five's, the lockdowns stopped hunting and allowed the deer to breed, also a number of hunters who used to take 100 deer a year from the area are no longer hunting for various reasons...just this past week we had deer roaming around less than 100 metres from the house....the area also seems to have gone out of favour with hunters, I don't know the reason for this and can only surmise.

Same as you Happy Jack. Area looks familiar but it would be up to OP to state where. Sure enough the animals need thinning out and who's to say that he didn't at end of trip. Probably wouldn't be wise to put up video of culling, sure as eggs breaking when dropped, some 'Karen' would get offended at the 'waste'. No win situation either way.

If you watch the full video you’ll see a few cull hinds taken at the end. Bloody epic mission in mid winter.

100% agree! A lot of time, money and sweat goes into discovering a good spot - takes one person of questionable morals/ethics, and nek minute there's tour buses rolling in there.

And yep, I love that his videos are ego-free/bullshit free compared to most. Keep 'em coming!

there is reference to doing so (shooting hinds) at 23minute mark.....not shown but neither is the chammy being shot. neat country and some huge walks.... good on you,thats a stag well earnt.

As a hunter yet to take a deer (tally: 1 goat in a year, 3 deer spooked) the idea of needing to cull always makes me sad. I'm in it for the meat, not heads, so happy to cull hinds and carry out the meat. But I'd also not like someone to come into an area and clean out the few hinds I know are there.
