Lots of hinds around, someone should shoot them.

I know it’s been said on here before many times, so sorry to say it again.

There will be herds and opportunities like that from top to bottom in NZ.

All you need to do is get out there, and do the hard yards.
Which simply means walk a bit further than the average road end hunter, whose main hunting kit is a jacked up 4x4 and a slab of piss.
Get up before dawn, stay out on the hill until dark. Keep the wind in your face.
You will eventually find “your spot”

You will or sweat buckets with no result. But eventually you’ll hit pay dirt.

Plenty of good buggers on here will help in narrow down the where to start areas handy to your home turf. But the rest is on you.

His hunt, his choice. If the herd size bothers you so much, get out and do something about it.

It was an excellent video from a dedicated and hard out hunter. Each to their own.

If you wand to cull deer or see them in numbers walk up any track into the Ruahines. That would be a good start.

Yep this conversation again.Deer for Africa everywhere pretty much they are almost comparable to rabbits, this doesn't mean they are easier to hunt they still give ya the slip if you don't know what your doing.for example i bombed up a mob of 40-50 on my flats bordering the tararuas a month or so ago, got 8 for the meat for the next year or so, now I won't even care about shooting hinds for the next little while, id rather see them live than kill them for no reason.the rest didn't even run into the tararuas they went around me and into a river where I came from and ran down into the neighbours.i believe these deer weren't resident but district deer that move around the area.Point being shooting them isnt going to get on top of numbers,that mob is going to be 70 odd strong in the next few weeks.i don't know what the answer is apart from poisoning which im totally against.guys that have shot 100s of deer are usually the ones that have access or have worked super hard to find the numbers and don't really care about meat,they want a trophy.Anyone upset about this the only answer for you is get out there and find them for yourself,its hard yakka probably to hard for the majority but like anything of high value it comes at a price which in this case is time.

to get on top of them,you need to shoot more,even if they are shot to waste.
and opening access for others to do so....is one way to do it.

My point was hearing comments about culling in vids is like saving up after working for minimum wage after school in a supermarket to buy an old Mitsi Mirage while a girl in your class gets given a brand new CRX VTEC by her parents.
You know you've earned your car and it's totally worth it, but it doesn't stop part of you really wanting a new CRX.
I've got some strong leads, a plan for the roar, and a keen wife so success will come.

Yea I guess but it would take a group effort of all the farmers/land owners in the area to say yep lets let randoms on to bomb the deer up.Otherise they just move to the safety of a near by area that doesn't have people pressuring them.also id say 75% of the landowners want numbers high for recreation for themselves, kids,family,income not all farmers want them gone.
I actually think most see the deer as an asset or big bonus when purchasing or running a farm.

Hi mate keep at it with identifying leads and such.a tip for you is this-Its a big deal for a land owner to offer hunting access,i am an electrician and I have asked a few farmers if I could go for a hunt on there place after a year or 2 of knowing them and doing work for them.youll soon figure out the politics of hunting on there place by chats with them.i often do small jobs and callouts for them for no charge and when they have asked about the invoice I have said no worries on that one as I appreciate the hunting access you give me.I prob only go for 1-3 hunts on there place a year so it doesn't become a situation of IOU.Just try and offer something in thanks to them that has value like your time or knowledge,dont say ill give ya some venison sausages ffs.

But yes, as Tahr has said, the Ruahines are crawling with deer. As much as I struggle with shooting for the sake of it, the numbers are that high now we have to all do our part.
And burtonator keeps the vids coming I enjoy them mate.

Firstly I’ll just say that no matter what you do you can’t keep everyone happy.

As stated in the video we were along way in and we were trophy hunting. I’m not spending thousands of dollars, time off work, etc etc to shoot hinds especially on the first day.
Its taken a lot of time and effort to sort out spots, figure out where the deer are at a specific time of year.
Doing km after km, looking over thousands of animals, leaving some cracker stags that were just too young in the hope you or another like minded hunter manages to find a truely mature public land stag.
You simply don't find them by culling a heap of hinds when you see them.

as shown in the video we culled some hinds at the end of the trip.

That's a great offer 7mmsaum, I might take you up on it one day. Cheers for that.

I think things need to be taken into consideration, this video was taken mid winter when red deer tend to mob up in suitable areas.
