    Luck and a CZ

Lovely hot day today as there was not a breath of wind or a cloud in the sky.

    Surely good enough to hunt

As the ute idled around the outside of the orchard i scanned for the easy ones from the window.

Shaded on the west side i spotted a rabbit near the shelter belt, slipping from the seat i used what cover i had and measured the distance

Easing the trigger i saw him lurch sideways and lay still

    Luck

Locking the ute i carefully made my way to the centre of the orchard, my plan to be able to shoot 360 degrees, new trees going in the ground tomorrow just don't need their bark chewed !!

As the shadows drew out i welcomed a diversion landing in an open paddock to my south west, they settled 121 safe yards away.

I ranged them and set up with as firm a rifle rest as i could .

A soft click drifted back signalling a hit

    In the eye

    Luck

Concentrating my scanning efforts in the lusher grass

Surrounded by the days warmth and heavy apple blossom scent allowed the afternoon to drift by easily, patience here would reward surely

Small birds came and went and the quail made an appearance or two, then with the care only age can bring a Hare slunk into view, very aware that he wasn't alone.

He loped along using the tree trunk line as cover, swivelling on the bipod i kept him in sight and flicked the safety off.

Lifting my head to get a visual on his range stopped him, i had been sprung, it was now or never

A tip of the ear aim and he soaked up the 42g sub, our new trees would be safe

    Luck

Needing to be home before dinner or i would get my ears burnt i collected him and made my way back to the ute.

    Sun warming the CZ

Twas a bad day to be a Hare.

Nice, I cut my teeth when I got my licence here, doing the same thing around a winery. I miss it. Changed hands and new owners built their home in the winery, so no chance to shoot it anymore.

I nailed a plover with the HMR on sat. 60m POFF.
Slapped a hare through the neck at 25m later with the 22 subs. It was sitting on the edge of the lucerne by the fence, so I sneaked along like a cat until I was covered by a tree. got into position and mouse squecked at her. She put her head up and Thud.
    42gr subsonics nailed it.

I know that Hares' are very naughty and eat your young trees. And of course need to be controlled. That's simply what you have to do.
But...if I can avoid shooting a Hare, I always will.

I find them fascinating. They are sort of the big game of the fluffy varieties. Survivalists. Living above ground. Always alert. And sometimes quite silly.
    I like them.

    Nice Rabbit @7mmsaum

My blue rabbit had a couple legs less and wasn't as fluffy

Although it did fluff up a bit when the Speedmaster spoke up.

Missed two rabbits in the top corner by the willow tree, bastards were running faster than Husain Bolt ducking and diving between the trees by the time I spied them.

Missed another one which ran under your stack of posts as I rounded the corner.

    Cheers

Shooting Rabbits is so much fun, they adapt to hunting pressure and can be quite tricky at times.

Excellent in a casserole too !!!

Nice posts guys, really enjoy the reading.
I was invited for a night bunny shooting the other night, not something that comes thru often, the person who invite me actually run out of options for shooters and I was the "lucky" one then.
My CZ455 shot 153 bunnies and 1 possum, but I must admit, I did missed a lot too. Lol!

    Sorry no photos.

Cool story rabbits are a lot of fun to hunt. And yes they and Hares are hard on newly planted trees.
