Take your dog out there and send him to find. Use a tracking lead.
One time I lost both my hearing aids in very dense bush in Clements road and did not realise till I got back to my car. Replacement cost was in the thousands, and I only had a couple of hours of light left. I had properly trained my GWP's to track on command so I put tracking leads on them both (in tandem) and took them to where I entered the bush earlier that day. Just on dark both dogs, after having led me through my wandering route through the bush for about 1500metres, stopped at a large windfall log. I had laid down on this log to roll over the top of it. Both hearing aids were there in the moss. I was very relieved, and also very pleased with the textbook performance of my dogs in a situation other than finding game. Finding your rifle mag should be no problem if your dog is trained to find and track.
