I've never heard off knife blanks as per say, they may very well exist I've just never seen them. I would just go to your nearest engineering spot, You first need to decide on the bland thickness and the steel type, you might be lucky and they might have an off cut for a good price.

Yeh im afraid adding scales to a pre bought blade isnt exactly knife making however there aee sites in the usa that sell both.

Files are a good source of steel, d2 usually, last time I bought a length of 01 from fletchers, 50x3 flat

Ss+m in Auckland and Christchurch sell O1 and other tool steels suitable for a knife, they will also temper them for you once you have roughed out the shape, I got loveless blots from the UK bot they may be a closer source, and don't let anyone tell you that just putting scales on a knife is easy, if you are shaping it all by hand and want to do a good job it's hard work...also even the Japanese sword smiths of old dot not make the swords alone, someone made the blade, someonelse the sheath, someone else the sharpening...

Good buddy kindly made a wee skinning one up for me, he cut out the tang from a spear he brought back from overseas, and I supplied some antlers that were being discarded off a deer at the sheds.

All he told me was the antlers were a pain when shaping as it smelt like burnt plastic, and the drill bits went blunt when drilling into the tang

Tell your mate that a drill bit can be resharpen... And the tang can be annealed.

I"m an amateur knife maker and can help with blanks. At this stage I have a few O1 toolsteel (carbon steel, not stainless) blanks available that have already been heat treated. Send me a PM
