Thread: Mangakahu valley road end

Hey guys, had a weekend off for work thought id go somewhere different to most people. When to the mangakahu valley road end. Had a doc sign up saying the walks etc. but had a massive iron gate with no entry looks like its private owned land. Anyone been before or have a contact to ask.

Yep - best mate owns farm looking across at where you talking and I know that area well
Apparently farmer down the road bought a piece of land that I think was Maori land - but not a 100% on that and has effectively blocked access - into what we called Nufields

I have been in there once before no issues. It does go up through farm land for a while but I'm sure it's part of the Te Aroha trail. Don't remember a no entry sign so maybe check with the local DOC office first.

When were you there last - I just heard the above about the blocking a few days ago - but thought it had happened a while back but maybe not
The farmer in Q - umm - how I say this - selfish prick who has had access via other farms for decades but it was always a one way street with Mr GC

Yep the gate was there. Bugger of a thing to climb over after you have walked out.

But no sign stating PVT Prop etc

Yeah just though even for hikers to they cant access the walk pretty selfish tho. I could understand if you had people poaching constantly otherwise should be open to public

He bought the piece of land to do exactly that - stop ALL access
Stupid DOC let it happen and knowing GC he would have paid peanuts for it (think it was just a large section or couple of acres)
Barrett family owned it prior for mem

Should of chemset the lock when i was there for him lol

Have a Facebook name of son of GC if anyone want
He ignores me with comments on all his pics on neighbors place who generously gave him access
Same guy - to those farmer neighbors who had leased a 60acre peace of Maori land that jutted "into" their 5000 acre farm
He went behind their back and offered the local Maori a few more $$ and took the lease off them - huge inconvenience to them as it stopped stock flow to Wool shed etc

Think that sums the guy up - ah ???

Don't remember a sign and if I had wouldn't have gone in. I remember finding a pic of the gate on a trampers blog talking about having to climb it so assumed it was all good. Probably lucky the car was still there when I got out.
