    Mangamako (no longer) hut

Nostalgia has swept the room, and I'm thinking of taking a walk to the Mangamako hut site.

Back a lifetime ago I used to drive through the forestry and park up above the Karihoto stream - does anyone know if you can still get in that way? It's going to be an epic otherwise.

    Thanks all

I have not been through that way for a good twentish years, even then dropped off. Sorry not much help.

Beautiful country though can understand your nostalgia.

I flew into Duckville a few years ago, but wanted to walk up the river this time. You could go in up the Ohutu and along the ridge, but not in a weekend.

Should be pretty good hunting in all of Te Urewera actually.
Would’ve hardly been hunted last 6 months

Access is hit and miss depending on forestry operations. Even when the gates are open your vehicle is not that safe anymore. I have fond memories of that 'gut buster' climbing up out of the creak to the car park.

Hey mate, the track is still there in reasonable condition. Just make sure you leave all glovebox centre console in car open in forestry carpark. The gate has been open for months so you should be sweet with that. Plenty easy deer up there especially upstream from old hut site
