Looking to take the good lady away for a couple of days and hope to take the rifle for a walk at same time.
Any info on the hot springs area would be apreciated. IE. Safe parking ? Nice pools? Spot X ?
Oh ok, forget Spot x

GO TO THE END OF THE ROAD, IF ROAD IS WET AFTER RAIN IT CAN BE MUDDY. AT THE END OF THE ROAD THERE IS A FEW CAMP SITES WHICH KINDA OVERLOOK THE MOHAKA RIVER. DOWN TO THE RIGHT THERE IS A TRACK WHICH GOES DOWN FOR APROX HUNDRED METERS TO A COUPLE OF HOT POOLS WHICH ARE GREAT. WELL WORTH A VIST. IF YOU CAMP AT THE END OF THE ROAD THERE IS A WHOLE BUNCH OF COUNTRY UP THERE WHICH IS WELL WORTH A LOOK. THERE IS A TRACK WHICH FOLLOWS THE RIVER UP TO THE LODGE AND ANOTHER HOT POOL SITE.
Or go back up the hill from the gums at the end of the road, and hunt towards the Makino hut (you will see the sign on the way in).
You can do a round trip back around to the river and the blue gums (have a look on the map...in my day they were foldy out paper things, but I think they are lurking somewhere inside your computer nowadays).
Forget taking your missus if you don't know where Spot X is
Apart from that Camp at the Blue Gums the hot pools there are great, Hunt up towards Makino and don't forget to take your spinning rod.
Cheers
Pete

When you've been married for a few years, that spot x can be harder to find than a deer.
Well, that didn't take long
Real guns start with the number 3 or bigger and make two holes, one in and one out
Haha. This forum can degrade a thread faster than any other I know.
Getting back on track so to speak. One map I have is telling me there is a locked gate at the Potters road turn off from SH5. Anyone know if access is good here or do I have to drive almost to Napier before turning off ??

We try hard.
I'm not sure there is any public access through Crohane Forest to Potters road.
Last time I was in there the road was bloody rough but that was 20 years ago.
If you want to stick to the tar seal and your coming from Taupo then turn right onto the Glengarry Road follow that to the end then turn right again into Puketitiri Road and you on your way.
Cheers

Thanks Pete. That is a long way past where I was looking at turning off the highway
And remember if you playing with spot X in the tent. TURN OUT the bloody light so it doesn't look like a freak show to those outside the tent!
Boom, cough,cough,cough
nah leave it on!
You can always try the Crohane Forest but it's safer to stick to the seal on Glengarry road.
Also take care when crossing the ford on Makahu road read the sign and look for the water height gauge or this may happen.

A dip in the Mangatutu hot pools just before bed is bloody awesome on a cold winters night.
