I haven't kept track of how frequent the drops have been in the valley or their effects, wondering whether I should take rifle as well as rod for a school holiday trip? Any local advice please?

Definitely take a rod. Would be keen to know about the deer too.

If ya dont take a gun you know what you will see
Velocity is thrilling, but diameter does the real killing.
Take something light and short to med range
No deer in there at all, place is dead.
Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.
lotsa hunters, lotsa trampers, too busy these days

I left the rifle at home in the end - given that I had been assured that there were no deer.
And the fishing: all the pools had at least one obvious fish, I didn't even bother looking into the faster water. Great weather over the past 2 days for sight fishing.
Slip shooting gets underway in the SE Ruahines in another 4 weeks, somewhere much more in need of a reduction in deer numbers, so I'll take what I need from there.
There will be about half a dozen less reds in Tauherinikau next week.

Been devoid of deer in there for years.
