Me and why NZ
I hunt elk in central Montana with a bow. Most of my trips are 4-5 day solo trips, about 5-8 miles in. New Zealand wasn't really on my radar until a friend started talking about tahr. My overall goal with visiting NZ is to see new places and new animals. I'd really like to have an opportunity to bring a tahr or chamios home.
The work and difficulty of the hunt is exciting but I have a family i have to get home to so I don't want to take dumb risks. Thank you all for your hospitality and information.
I'm not a wordsmith but I truly love hunting and seeing new country.

Welcome aboard. What you seek is doable in our South Island. Put effort into your research and planning and don’t underestimate our high country and you will succeed with your goal and more importantly, return home to family.

I can't help or give you any advice on tahr. But if you were able to be in the Wellington area I could take you for a more bow friendly hunt where I live. There are heaps of Fallow deer and pig's. You wouldn't need a lot of time here to get a good chance with the bow or you could use my rifle. The offer is there anyway. You could tie it in after you try for a tahr. My boss owns a ranch near Deer Lodge which probably isn't too far from where you live?
Thanks Bradley

If you come with attitude to enjoy looking around and with luck harvest something to remember trip by...you will enjoy it and want to come back. Expecting to go home with big trophy is setting yourself up to be disappointed. This is a beautiful country with lots of game to harvest.come and enjoy yourself in our backyard. Welcome to the forum.

Welcome. Read Canross's excellent primer for visiting hunters.
One very important thing in regards NZ hunting . . . Allow extra time, trying to meet self imposed deadlines like making a flight is what will turn you into a casualty here. Any offer of a short hunt before your main mission should be accepted with alacrity, acclimatizing to our Sth Is mountains with a modest first trip will pay you great dividends. Cheers

Where in NZ are you planning to visit?
Chamois and Tahr are easily doable a couple of hours away from Christchurch.
Questions: Are you wanting to hunt with a bow, or rifle and are you looking for trophy animals or just the opportunity for a crack at one for the experience?
