Interested to know how many of you actually recover meat from stags during the roar, and if so do you prepare it any different to other times of the year.
Yep, I use the meat from all deer I shoot - regardless of time of year.
Yea of course, Minced a stag up yesterday, nacho's that night mmmmmmmm. Age it and it'l be all good.
Yip. This hua had 2 inches plus of fat on his arse. He was one of the best tasting deer I've shot. Full flavour. Wasn't full roaring but was making noise and was pissed up

I must say though, I have tasted some horrid stag meat that even dogs frown at :D

Even if a stag is scungy I usually take the back steaks and at least a hind leg, and decide what to do with it after I've tasted some.
Carrying a big load of meat and a set of antlers can be challenging some times. More than once all I've carried out has been just the back steaks. It doesn't worry me too much. They are still making them.
In fact if you wanted to be a true conservationist during the roar you would go to one of the high population areas and just shoot hinds, and bring back a pack full of just back steaks.
Im mostly a meat hunter During the roar is about the only time ill shoot a hind in preference to a stag spikers and scrubby heads excepted of course.
In a perfect world we would let the big guy populate the gene pool then if you really want a head take him out afterwards if you can find him again.
Reality is someone else probably will deal to him before he has the chance.
Over the weekend the Pongaroar hunt turned in lots of red heads missing one or both bey tines which I believe is a result of this.
And the winning Fallow head got flogged. Bastards.Quote:

I never waste meat, even stinky stags Ill take back legs and back steaks, can always sell it to someone :D
