Spot on Tahr. outinabout I wouldn't going worrying to much yet with your son losing interest after only a couple of unsuccessful hunts, he will still be learning lots from just being out there with you.

My old man started taking me & my brother out hunting/tramping when we were about 5. We went out on plenty of adventures over the next 10 or so years and not once did Dad shoot a deer, if fact I never even got to see a wild deer in all those years! It never seemed to put me off though as come the next school holidays I was always nagging Dad to go hunting again. Come 16 though I booked straight in to get my firearms licence and was now more determined than ever to get out on my own and see/shoot my first deer. Got my first deer a year later.

I know with my grandson, I took him out for rabbit shoots, then possums with the spotlight, onto a goat, then a pig, and a hind last Xmas.
This was from age 5 with his plastic gun, then my .22 and through to now aged 9 and he can handle the .222 with some help.
So my aim was to always remind him of firearm safety each time we went out, and just as importantly, to remind myself that each trip had to be fun for him, regardless of what we shot. Just goin out somewhere to shoot at targets was enough to get him excited.
Like spotlighting possums which means it can get cold after a while so stop and light a fire to warm up, and let him throw some wood onto it and poke around it like kids do.
Like adults, kids also like to get a result from a trip and a kill is important but not everything, and sometimes the result can be the memory of just bein out there with Dad (or Mum), or grandad in my case, and doin (and eating) things they're not usually allowed to do at home.

I've shot 9 deer in 31 hunts. Only 2 public reds. The rest fallow on private and one red on back of a mates dairy farm. Would be cool if I could find a new private block to hunt whether I have to pay or do farm work for them . Following there rules and respecting the property and instructions. I might be a tad too hopeful but worth an ask I guess.would rather ask and get laughed at and told no than poach animals.

Depends a lot on where in NZ your asking. I am in CNI and my experience is about 1 permission for 75 polite "asks". It's disheartening.
