Quite a few years ago I stopped at a roadside rest area between Awakino and Urenui and there were two sheepskins hanging on the fence.
Someone I mentioned it to reckoned there was some old law that said you could take livestock for food as long as you left the skin - couldn't find even a rumour of the law myself.
Cripes, if that was the case the fences around Hamilton would just look like a continuous wall of white.

I had a look at the legislation website, the Crimes Act quite clearly says taking of livestock is theft, punishable by up to 7 years imprisonment.
