    Mid Pohangina hut track

Hi team, I am planning a trip to south Ruahine. Does any one walk up the river from the bridge and what’s the water level like at the moment? I heard that the access from the farm was closed due to someone shot their farm stock. I don’t mine getting wet feet but definitely not keen for a swim in the river. I am heading up from Auckland, any better recommendations would be helpful.

    Cheers!

The Manawatu river is running high and dirty at the moment so i would think the Pohangina will be also, i have seen a fisherman who walked up from the bridge but that is in more favorable summer conditions. So i wouldnt bother myself but i hate wet cold feet at the best of times!! and probably more than just wet feet.!!
If you are rearly keen on the mid Po hut track you could drop down from the track off Takapari rd but you still got to cross the river at the bottom and think ya need 4wd to get up Takapari rd. And yeah the access has been closed due to dickheads going up there doing all sorts of shit, very dissappionting. cheers

3 Places for you to have a look at instead of mid Po.

Alice Nash/Iron Gate - Nice easy walk, alt track when river is high, good hunting. You can be in there in a very short time.

Rangi/Deadmans - Another easy walk, no river crossings, Good hunting, watch for snow this time of the year.

Purity - Bit more of a steeper track, nice country, but by Christ ring Ritchie before you go. You have to cross his land and hes getting quite pissed about people not calling first. I know Ritche well.

Cheers for that mate! Yeah, it’s a long drive to there, I’d pick up another road end to put my feet on. Haven’t been to the north which is closer but it’s been 1080ed.

It will be a very solid walk just to get to the public boundary and if you get rain you will be stuffed. I would look to come in via an alternate route or pickup one of the other areas already suggested.
