A quick trip for a meat animal late last year in SE Queensland, not what you would call a hunt, more of a cull at a large cattle property.
Mate and I went to look for rusa deer at a nearby property that we set up some pig traps the week before, we set up some mms enabled cameras over the traps as we could get some phone coverage in that area, usually the owner would do a run everyday but was away for the weekend. We met at a creek flat and walked opposite sides about 800 yards apart towards a creek junction a km further along, as my mate approached a stand of trees I could make out a stags rack moving above the high grass at speed, we had been busted. And we got caught in a heavy downpour! We made our way back to the vehicles through waist high grass and cobblers pegs to take off wet clothing, we got images of pigs around one pig trap so we would look for deer at another area on the way.
We went to a spot we had found deer before, as we drove down a firebreak I saw a spiker feeding on a hillside, we parked the ute with the engine still running, I slowly walked up using a stand of trees for cover, leant on a sapling for a rest and killed the spiker with a shoulder shot with my Winny 308/165gr factory round, a nice size meat animal.
After dressing the spiker we got to the pig trap, one in the trap and his mate hanging around, my mate shot the pig with a 22mag in the ear, he cart wheeled into a huge clump of lantana nearby, we stopped at crawling in to retrieve it for a photo when we spied a shed snake skin...it can stay there! We shot the trapped pig and dragged it out for a photo, then reset and fed up the trap before heading home.
