    Molesworth Ballot 2018

    Hey fellas.
We have a ballot for the 2018 march hunt period and have decided to continue with our plans to go despite the massive aerial assault on the hunting blocks.
Hopefully the rain this weekend has washed any remaining baits well away.
    So i have a few Q's

Is there many folk out there have a Ballot for this year at Molesworth.
Is there anyone here part of Marlborough NZDA? How did the post operation survey go?
Is there any knowledge of the 1080 operations outcome?

Still looking forward to going but be good to know whats going on down there
    Cheers

We have Bottom Archeron mid March. Our block has been treated, I say tht loosely, on one side of the Archeron River and the other side is supposed to be clear we'll see.

I have a close friend that did a count in there not long after the drop. On foot and by machine. I cant remember exact numbers but She was saying for the relatively small area they covered, they found shitloads of dead deer. Ratio was staggering.
They are working on future operations requiring deer reppellant.

@kokako cheers, it's the other end up near Tennyson where I was landing on going so should be ok. Don't think I'll bother doing the other trip I had planned... Exactly where they dropped on the inland road

Dang thats a lot of Veni to waste and die in a inhumane fashion.
If the treatment area was 60,000Ha that works out to 0.0062 dead deer per Ha, roughly.

I can't remember the exact number but was told an animal a hectare.
    So sounds about right.

They only searched a small part of the area as well.

    Hi all,

I'm involved with the Marlborough NZDA. We conducted a survey of the Molesworth using a Helicopter after the 1080 drop last year. A research paper is currently being written detailing our findings. We aren't releasing any details of our findings as we are keeping our powder dry for when the report is completed.

I can however talk about my personal experience. I booked the Chimney block in late Jan as I wanted to see how things were looking 3 months after the 1080 drop. The Chimney block had 1080 applied to it but is right on the boundary of the poisoned area and next to some prime hunting areas that didn't get 1080 dropped on them. I spent two days hunting this block and the only living things a found were rabbits and hares. There was zero deer sign.

I have since cancelled my roar block as I believe it is pointless going in there. The DOC permit states:

"Hunters need to be aware that this operation has had an impact on the numbers of deer, and you will expect to see fewer deer than normal in affected areas during a hunting trip to Molesworth."

I think "see fewer deer" is a huge understatement. It should say, you are highly unlikely to see any deer. If you have a roar block in the Molesworth you may want to do some of your own research before you head in.

I would be interested to hear what other hunters have experienced in the Molesworth since the 1080 drop.
