More firearms stolen in the nelson area

Firearms and expensive hunting gear has been stolen from a home in Riwaka, near Nelson when the residents evacuated after Monday's 7.5 magnitude earthquake near Kaikoura.

The burglary has left owners feeling like they were being watched by opportunists.

A woman who lives at the address said the thousands of dollars worth of hunting gear taken.Six firearms which included some antique pieces, rifles and shotguns were stolen from the Riwaka address in the early hours of Monday morning. Other hunting gear like new tramping boots was also stolen.

The woman and other members of the household woke up to the earthquake just after midnight on Monday. They didn't feel safe in their concrete home and decided to stay with a nearby family member incase of a stronger tremor.

"While we were gone someone ripped our shed off," she said.

"The door to the shed was open and the lid of the freezer was up. Then I noticed that the two gun cabinets had their doors ripped open."They've selected the best of the hunting stuff and left the crap behind. They knew what they were doing."tems taken:

    Lee Enfield 303
    Remington 110 shotgun
    Remington 552 .22
    Winchester 370 .22
Very old side by side shotgun
    Lamber shotgun
She said it was only a few months ago a neighbour on the street had all of their hunting gear targeted.

I would find it very hard to leave my property in an event like that, just because there are to many assholes out there waiting to steal. I hope the person/s are found, bad enough the earthquake to then have that happen.

    Turn it into a fish/venison smoker !

You could fit a whole leg of Venny in one easily.

having been burgled twice way back when a ratbag family moved into the neighbourhood i can appreciate how the family feels - to me, its not so much what was taken as the creepy feeling of knowing the fckers were going thru your house and will probably be back . . .

once you get over the pissed off part it could be a good chance to upgrade your gear with the insurance money . . and your security

Someone close to you or your friends may be behind the firearms theft .This is happening more and more every day . I had a friend who died in a accident and his best friend who no one thought he would of stolen. was behind it .We all have friends who we have hunted with and taken on trips, but they usually there for one reason. To climb the ladder to better hunting ground or to use you to get what they want .
I had 4 guys trying to break into my house 2 weeks ago at 3 am . They smash gates down and smashed in power box and then left .The next day we find both dogs had been poisoned .1 is still at vets and a $1200 bill the other, after a lot of work managed to pull thru . The gsp 7 month old pup has lost the lining on her stomach and it need to heal . Dogs are getting poisoned around Taupo and then the break ins start .

@Tahr pay you scrap value for it , was after a lockable box for a while now to store chemicals.
Nothing is tough about having a 70 lb bow and looking like an uncoordinated praying mantis while trying to draw it back.

the problem is even after these scum bags are caught (if they are) they will get a slap on the wrist and go back and do it again. chances are they are stealing to swap for drugs

Hell fellas; don't be throwing that safe in the dump. Save it to use as a smoker in a bit. But first, after having a chat with the crooks (in braille) lock 'em up in there with a nest of fire ants, white-faced hornets, and then let the dermatid beetles have at 'em. Might just discourage their progeny from following too close...
