Did some volunteer pest control work in there when Travis was running it and they did quite a bit of restoration work. But this is a load of BS. Why would anyone do this? Next someone will come up with Disney Score for rats and mice they shoot/trap.

I've often thought about what is the most ecologically virtuous pest to shoot. with goats for instance a Billy is only worth the native Veg it will eat in the rest of its life. Culling nannies will be more beneficial. An economist like Gareth would have a discounted future value formula that factors in the potential rate ofpopulation increase (exponential in many Nz localities).

likewise, a young animal will have more years of eating and reproducing ahead of it.
If we have an expert On feral cat Population structure in NZ here, it would be interesting to hear whether killing young cats or even kittens has any effect on the total population.

just measured the kids cat what a prick of a job as its still live only 132 so not worth shooting .the neighbors though have a big male might have a beer over there tonight.

If you keep an eye on game birds around a rural property - as I have done with Pheasants - you see the joy of them living safely in your environment along with the sadness of them being wiped out by predators
Often the first sign of a cat being around is a pheasant carcase - carefully picked to pieces by a cat - then another carcase and another - the predator usually makes a fatal mistake and decides to try fresh rabbit, sardines or Chef chicken and salmon casserole - in a cage
I have trapped one or two cats and don’t recall ever seeing one that was scrawny or unhealthy - so they eat very well - generally rabbits as rat numbers were always low - but hen Pheasants on their nests are very easy pickings for predators
I like the idea of the Disney score for rats - I have got 15 this week - 2 hit by a Victor but dropped clear of the trap - maybe another 5 this morning - March - rat numbers exploding

Even the DOC biologists were mystified at his claims that feral cats were decimating native birds, and publicly disagreed with him. If what he was saying was true then Fiordland national park would be full of feral cats. It is not. The reason why is that cats are natural predators of rodents, and wild cats live on the edge of human habitation because there is a good supply of rats and mice there. They are purpose built for rodent hunting. They take birds as targets of opportunity, but a cat dropped into the bush with lots of native birds and no rodent supply would starve to death quickly.

The man has done nothing of note. Why would you take his word for anything?

I reckon they are out there for sure. I have seen a set of cat tracks following some kiwi prints through a sand dune on doughboy bay stewart island not so long ago. Also managed to shoot one in Masons bay same trip.

Warning if your a cat lover....stop reading this now !!

I'm still catching possums at work but we noticed something was cleaning up the carcasses. Firstly started finding them like this.



Then found one like this



The surgical nature of that cut through the skin suggested a feral cat (we are miles from any house)

So I took a couple of cat raps up there this week. One a Steve Allen cat kill trap


And the other was the trusty old cage trap both were baited with rabbit



It was the cage that got him



It was the biggest dam Tom cat I've ever seen !!!

Nose to tail measured 94cm





Tail measured 30cm

Girth was 49cm



+ a bonus 10pts for a set of nuts



Morgan score 94 + 30 + 49 + 10 = 183

This thing was a frickin beast !!! Had some fishing scales in the car and it weighed in at a whopping 6.5kgs massive head and a body packed full of mussel !!!
