Mt White Access - latest news article

A couple of articles have been posted about Mt White's access being restricted by the new station owners. I've seen mention of them in other threads but I thought I'd post one here for those interested in having a read:

    Recent article: https://newsroom.co.nz/2024/08/28/im...-force-us-out/

    One from last year: https://newsroom.co.nz/2023/04/26/mo...national-park/

I used to go in every winter for a week
    Great times had

But it all turned to shit a few years ago
Very sad because a nice piece of country with moderate animal numbers

    But access became almost impossible

yea, used to use the Barnes family accomodation to access to fishing the rivers back there. Now even the lake by the musterers old accommodation is now controlled and considered exclusive.
Happy to pay track fees but those are now gone for access to the back of the station - access is only granted to those paying for accomodation etc.

I don’t know mt white from my arse, but I just had a look on the map and it looks like there’s a wide marginal strip up the poulter. Does anyone drive up that?

Not sure sorry. Like @akaroa1 said there's good country up there, just a shame it's blocked off. And if they don't let people hunt, animal numbers could get a bit out of control.

Used to be able to drive up but walking and mountain biking only now. The land on either side of the Poulter is owned by the station up to the park boundary. The station was being waro'd a couple of weeks back too

One time we were in after they had taken WARO 400 deer out the week before

We still saw plenty of animals
It not like we were neat hunting and we could afford to be fussy
I mostly hunted with a muzzleloader or vintage rifle which is nice when numbers are high because you muck up a few hunts

4wd clubs used to go in there all the time, it's a fair way in but you followed a track up the true right until you got to a huge scree slip, then drove down that. Was also access to the river further back downstream. If it started drizzling or raining when you were driving back up the slip then ya had a hell of a mission getting the trucks back up. Last I heard of a club going in was 2-3yrs ago.

I had a very exciting time on that very slip 30 years ago when driver got distracted crossing it. 5 hours later and a bit of work and we were away again.

This "moment" wouldn't of involved two lads from Ashburton in a creamy coloured truck cab land rover by chance?

He’s certainly spent a lot of money on the place, flash road, huts, developing new pastures, beekeepers, etc I doubt he pays much tax though
