Thread: Mussel point airstrip

Hi guys, Can anyone give me details on the mussel point airstrip used by the venison hunter back in the day, i have read about it in many books and the only info i've got on where it was is south west of haast, i can not find it on any maps including google. any storys or photos would be great. Thanks

Mate I'm pretty sure it's just paddocks now on the right just south of hasst.

It is now private. I havent ever used it. I have seen the odd aircraft tied down there though. Just south of the Turnbull river on the sea side of the road.

Hey thanks guys at least i can find it now, i have alot of interest in those days, i now also have a neighbour that was meet hunting back in the day and the storys he tells. I were born way to late thats certain.

Hi Kiwiman,been years since I was at the Mussel point strip.I went there to meet up with a mate,straight from high school I was 15yrs young lol.
I joined up with that mate and lived there on and off for just on eighteen months.That was getting near the end of the meat days.The tax man had finally arrived lol.
Many a great night was spent at Mussel point and bloody hard work also.Every man and his dog was out with the big moon beam,great times were had.

If you can get your hands on read NZ Sport Flying Autumn 2013 with the article by Neville Cameron. Same pioneering spirit as the venison boys and in a smaller plane. The last sentence is a classic and is what fucks NZ as Dave Ratcliffe rightly says in his book.The dude who used to own the Mobil petrol station was an old venison shooter and pilot and features in the South Coast vids.Just about all the venison pilots on the wall behind the counter are dead mostly from prangs.There was a foto of the young Joe Keeley.
