That must blow them up ?

Is what most hunters say to me when they see the size hole in my barrel. Im sure they dont believe me when I point out there 7mm or 30 cal will destroy more meat than the 458 Win. Today I shot a big goat at 40yds for dog tucker and it was moved sideways with the impact. reared up and fell dead 6' from the impact spot.

I do have plenty of smaller high velocity guns but as I get older I like the bigger best.

Yep big weight moving slowly thru the air, ouch. Just loading some 577 snider and some 500 gr 45/70. Maybe BP but great energy

There is definitely a point where it goes from 'big hole, big mess' to 'big hole, not much mess'.
I can assure you that the 375Ruger I saw used 2 weeks ago does the former.

With its back legs

308 it kicks a bit more than the 30-06 with 180's hot load but its a softer push thats with the speer 400 gr. The 400gr Woodleigh PP at 200 fps more is a step up and the 500 gr full power Elephant load is on another level again. It can be loaded from low 45-70 all the way up. the 350 gr barns x at 2750 Fps for 5890ft-lbs.

What load and projectile were they using?

My .375 can be messy when using stoked up 220gr loads of standard construction @ about 2800fps, but with something like 350gr Rhinos or Norhforks @ about 2200fps it just punches through making a nice big wound channel.

The other thing with a big bore (.416 and up) is that you can rely on calibre to cut the wound channel so expansion is less important that in say a .243, just chug 'em through!

It's a Hornady load, something like 275gn going 2800+fps = big mess to clean out/up, especially when it goes in from the front :oh noes:

Think it is more bullet construction and velocity than calibre doing the damage.

That looks like the ammo - $5 a shot here.
Yeah we have told him he needs to pick some different ammo if he's going to keep using it.
I was thinking reload it with a similar load to 373Win specs but going bigger & slower makes sense till he wants to shoot something at 300m, as he does.

Barefoot you just have to wait a little longer for the hit, it still gets there!

LOL, I used to hunt a lot with a 44mag shooting 300gn soft nose, so I well remember the bang, wait, thump routine ;)

Thanks for the info John - a big fat slow round looks like a good way to go. Not as much meat damage as I would have thought.
