Thread: My First Deer for 2016

Went out tonight at 8.30pm as it seems to be the right time to find deer grazing in our back paddocks. Got to 3/4 the way down our track and left the 4x4 and headed on foot to 1 of 2 spots that I have spotted them before.
Had just stopped raining, and now there is a misty fog hanging around, visibility to about 80mtrs. Arrived at the first spot and sure enough I sight a young Rusa buck grazing about 70mtrs out.
I slowly dropped behind a gate post as I'm on the crest of a 30degree incline so I have plain view of him but I'm out of his view. He hasn't been spooked by my arrival, so I take aim over open iron sights.
I get the take the safety off, and take up the slack out of the trigger, one more second and I squeezed off the round, just as he moves forward. Too late the round takes him in the flank just before the rear quarter.
He goes down and safety goes on, I'm up and off to finish the job, one shot to the head and he's done. Couldn't lift him into the ute so had to back the ute into a hollow and dragged him over to the ute and slid him into the ute.
Fitted him into a wheelbarrow back at the house and took me and the mrs to haul him up by the back legs to process him.
